Scope
This course is designed to comply with the requirements laid out in rule II/4, section A‐II/4, and table A‐II/4 of the International Convention on standards of training, certification and Watch keeping for seafarers STCW/78, as amended.
General objectives
The participant must show aptitude and ability in the tasks watch keeping working in the engine department according to the requirements in section A‐II/4 of the STCW/78, as amended, as well as with Chapter VIII, section A‐VIII/2 regarding the Organization of the guards and principles that should be observed; observe safe working practices; understand orders, given to understand in the activities of the ship and help relations human effective on board the ship.
Once this course is completed, the students will be able to:
- Fulfill basic orders given by the helmsman if they are given in English.
- Keep a proper lookout and listening.
- Contribute to the lookout and the control of a safe watchkeeping.
- Use emergency equipments and apply emergency procedures.
Prerequisites
This course is given before starting work on board merchant vessels of international navigation.
For this course students need to be proficient in reading and writing, as well as arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Additionally students need a basic knowledge of the English language and to be of legal age (18 years or older).
